Akki roti or Otti recipe for breakfast

I would be discussing about the most famous and common food item of Coorgi cuisine, Akki roti(ಅಕ್ಕಿ ರೊಟ್ಟಿ) also called Otti or Rice roti.

The recipe here is with a slight modification so as to be able to be eaten in breakfast too without curries.
You would require the following ingredients for making Akki roti:
1. 100g raw rice
2. 250 ml hot water
3. 100g rice flour
4. Salt to taste
5. 1 small onion
6. Green corriandor leaves
7. 1 - 2 green chillies according to taste

Though rice flour is commonly available in market but in case if you dont get it at your place you get get it grind from your nearest chakki(place where flour is ground) or even at home if you have a fine grinder.

Rice flour:
Soak rice for atleast 6 hrs. Dry it in sunlight for a day. When it is completely dried grind it or get it grind to a fine powder. Make sure it is grinded properly else you wont be able to make rotis.

Method of preparing Akki rotis:
1. Boil rice as you do normally. I personally prefer to keep it a little wet.
2. Chop onions, corriandor leaves and green chillies and keep aside.
3. Take a kneading plate and take the rice flour and mix the chopped onions etc, boiled rice and salt with the rice flour and trying kneading it first without adding water,
4. Half of the flour gets kneaded while thoroughly mixing these ingredients.
5. Later add the required amount of hot water so as to make the dough. The dough should not be too tight or loose. Mix a little oil so as to gather the dough properly.
6. Now make small balls of the dough and apply some dry flour to it and roll with a rolling pin.

7. To make perfect rotis you can use a chappati press. Apply oil to 2 plastic sheets and keep the flattened rice flour dough between these sheets and press with the chappati maker to make rotis.

8. Heat the roti tawa and put the rotis on it. Cook from both the sides and apply a little oil like while making parathas.

Your Akki rotis are ready to be eaten with curries or even for breakfast with chutneys.
